Cape Town

Cape Town's colourful history and combination of mountains and sea make it one of the most attractive cities in the world. Known affectionately as the Mother City, it is by far the oldest urban centre in South Africa. In 1652 the Dutch East India Company sent Jan van Riebeeck here to establish a fresh-produce garden (the Company's Garden) to supply its passing ships. The small way station grew gradually into a town, then into a city, passing from Dutch to British control in 1795. After the formation of the Union in 1910, Cape Town became, and remains, the legislative capital of the country and seat of Parliament.

Present-day Cape Town is a cosmopolitan place, populated by a mix of peoples descended from the indigenous Khoi, slaves originally brought here from Indonesia, Angola, Madagascar and Mozambique, settlers from many countries of Europe and, increasingly, Xhosa-speaking people from the Eastern Cape.
Superbly situated at the foot of Table Mountain, the city offers many things to do and see: mountain walks, swimming from beautiful beaches, scenic drives, museums, art galleries, historic monuments and many restaurants and music venues. Once you have exhausted the pleasures of Cape Town, there is plenty to enjoy in the surrounding region. Within a day's drive of the city you can sample wines and have lunch under the oaks at the farms along the Wine Route, watch whales at Hermanus, see the spring flowers to the north, and visit beautiful towns such as Stellenbosch and Tulbagh.
